Just to point out, testdisk exists for Linux too, over the years I've had 3 or 4 drives where they really went to lunch, start getting plenty of read errors. testdisk to the rescue! If you have a few bad sectors, fsck (linux scandisk/chkdsk equivalent) works a treat, it uses a spare copy of whatever filesystem info to rewrite the bad sector, the drive either finds the sector isn't bad once it's written to it, or finds it still is bad and maps it to a spare.
